Why are some reported experiences distressing?

Interpretation · editorial overview

Accounts vary, and researchers and experiencers propose different explanations for distressing content. Psychological, physiological, cultural, autobiographical, and spiritual interpretations should be identified as interpretations unless specifically tested. A frightening report does not permit us to diagnose the person’s character or declare a divine sentence against them. Retrospective retellings may also change how a person understands the experience. Support should prioritize dignity, careful listening, and appropriate professional help when distress persists. IANDS offers an experience-focused perspective, but organizational resources are not the same as controlled clinical verification. Avoid sensationalizing someone’s suffering or turning it into a fundraising tool.
