Is Hell Real?

Examining Scripture with reverence

1 John 4:7–21

Perfect love and fear

Love & assurance

Interpretation · identified paraphrase

John grounds Christian love in God’s initiative and the sending of his Son. Love for God must be expressed in love for others, and mature love addresses fear connected with punishment. Identified paraphrase.

Read in context

This passage does not make God’s holiness disappear. It corrects a view of God dominated by dread and asks whether love is made visible in community. Readers prone to intrusive religious fears should not be instructed to repeatedly test their sincerity until they feel perfect. Assurance is not a performance of emotional certainty. Trusted pastoral support and qualified mental-health care can work together.

A question for reflection
