Is Hell Real?

Examining Scripture with reverence

Revelation 20

The final judgment

Judgment & resurrection

Interpretation · identified paraphrase

Revelation portrays resurrection, judgment before a great white throne, opened books, and the defeat of death and Hades. The lake of fire is called the second death. This is a paraphrase of apocalyptic imagery, not an eyewitness description of geography.

Read in context

Revelation uses symbolic visions rooted in earlier Scripture. Interpretive traditions disagree about the millennium and how its images relate to a chronological sequence. Death and Hades being cast into the lake of fire is a reason not to use every biblical term as a synonym. Read chapters 21–22 too: judgment belongs within the promised renewal of creation, not a fascination with punishment detached from hope.

A question for reflection

How does the promise that death will end reshape your understanding of judgment?
