Is Hell Real?

Examining Scripture with reverence

Matthew 25:31–46

Judgment and the least of these

Judgment & mercy

Interpretation · identified paraphrase

Jesus describes the Son of Man separating people as a shepherd separates sheep and goats. The scene places acts of mercy toward the hungry, stranger, sick, and imprisoned within a sobering account of final judgment. This is an identified paraphrase, not a quotation.

Read in context

Read all three scenes in Matthew 25: preparedness, entrusted responsibility, and judgment. Christians debate the precise identity of “the least of these” and how this passage relates to justification by faith. Mercy is not a substitute savior; neither does grace make our treatment of others irrelevant. The parallel between eternal punishment and eternal life is central to debates about duration, but those debates should be represented rather than silently settled.

A question for reflection

Where could faith become tangible mercy in your life this week?
