Is Hell Real?

Examining Scripture with reverence

John 14:1–6

The hope of being with Christ

Hope & Christ

Interpretation · identified paraphrase

Facing his departure, Jesus comforts his disciples and promises a place with the Father and reunion with himself. He identifies himself as the way, truth, and life. This is an identified paraphrase.

Read in context

The farewell discourse addresses troubled disciples. Its heart is relationship with Christ, not speculative architecture. Christians can affirm the centrality of Jesus without using the passage to pronounce the final destiny of identifiable people. Read John 13–17 for its setting in love, service, the Spirit, and prayer. Hell should never be presented without the invitation and hope that frame the gospel.

A question for reflection

What changes when hope centers on a person rather than a description of a place?
