Is Hell Real?

Examining Scripture with reverence

Hebrews 12:18–29

Reverence without manipulation

Holiness & reverence

Interpretation · identified paraphrase

Hebrews contrasts the fearful approach to Sinai with coming to Mount Zion and Jesus, mediator of a new covenant. It calls believers to grateful worship with reverence and awe because God’s kingdom cannot be shaken. Identified paraphrase.

Read in context

The warning and invitation belong together. Holy fear is not a ministry technique for extracting money or forcing a decision. The chapter also speaks of endurance, peace, and holiness. Reverence recognizes God’s seriousness while approaching him through Christ. Read its imagery within the letter’s argument about Jesus rather than turning a single phrase into an unqualified threat toward a distressed reader.

A question for reflection

What would reverence look like as gratitude, humility, and steady obedience?
