Is Hell Real?

Examining Scripture with reverence

Luke 16:23; Revelation 20:13–14

Hades and the final judgment

Biblical lexicon

Interpretation · identified paraphrase

Hades is a Greek term connected with the realm of the dead. Revelation distinguishes it from the lake of fire and portrays it giving up the dead before its defeat. Identified lexical overview.

Read in context

The term’s function depends upon context. Luke’s narrative and Revelation’s symbolic vision are not identical literary settings. Many Christians distinguish an intermediate state from the final resurrection and judgment, while differing over particulars. Avoid casually labeling every vision of distress “Hades” or using the term as proof of a reported event. The biblical vocabulary sets interpretive questions, not a verification protocol for experiences.

A question for reflection

Which distinction gets lost when every term is translated simply as hell?
