Does a biblical parallel verify an experience?

Interpretation · editorial overview

No. A reported account may echo themes in Scripture because of prior religious knowledge, later interpretation, shared imagery, or other causes. Similarity does not independently establish that an event occurred as interpreted. Biblical comparison is useful for theological discussion, but it is not a substitute for provenance, documentation, and appropriate testing of empirical claims. Likewise, the absence of a particular detail from Scripture is not automatically a contradiction: silence and conflict are different judgments. State exactly which passage is being compared, which feature is similar, and what the comparison cannot decide. Our dossiers use limited assessments rather than verdicts of supernatural authenticity.
